How driving safety alerts work, and what they cannot tell you

The short answer

Driving alerts come from the sensors already in a phone: motion, rotation and position over time. They can reliably tell you that a vehicle travelled at a certain speed, arrived somewhere, or that a screen was being handled while moving. They cannot tell you who was driving, why someone braked hard, or whether a drive was safe overall, and treating the data as more certain than it is causes most of the arguments.

When a family adds a new driver, the driving features in a location app suddenly matter in a way they did not before. Parents want to know what these alerts actually measure, and whether the numbers mean what they appear to mean.

I want to answer that at the level of the sensors, because once you know how the data is produced, you know precisely how far you can trust it. That knowledge is also the thing that keeps this from turning into a fight, since most arguments about driving data are really arguments about a number being treated as a verdict.

The short version: the measurements are real, the interpretations are guesses, and your job as a parent is to keep those two categories apart.

What the phone is actually measuring

There is no special hardware involved. Every driving feature in a phone app is built from three ordinary inputs that modern phones already have.

  • The accelerometer measures changes in motion in three directions. Braking, accelerating, and the small vibrations of a road surface all show up here.
  • The gyroscope measures rotation, which is how an app can tell a turn from a lane change, and a phone being picked up from a phone lying still.
  • Position over time gives speed and route. Two positions and the gap between them produce a speed, and a sequence of them produces a trip.

From those three streams, an app infers events. A rapid drop in forward speed becomes hard braking. A sustained speed above a road's limit becomes a speeding event. A pattern of rotation and screen activity while moving becomes phone use. Notice the word in every one of those sentences: becomes. Each event is an interpretation of a signal, not a direct observation.

The sensors measure motion. Everything else is an educated guess about what caused it.

What it can tell you reliably

Being fair to the technology, quite a lot of it is solid. These are the things I would trust from a phone based driving report.

  • That a trip happened, and roughly when. Start time, end time and duration are dependable.
  • The route taken. Subject to the usual accuracy limits in tunnels and city centres, the shape of a journey is reliable.
  • Top speed and average speed. Position based speed is generally good on open roads, and this is the most trustworthy number in the whole report.
  • Arrival at a known place. A notification when someone reaches school, work or home is simple and rarely wrong.
  • Whether the screen was being handled while the vehicle was moving. The detection is not perfect, but a repeated pattern across many trips means something.

That set is genuinely useful. Arrival alerts alone remove most of the reason to text someone while they are driving, which is a safety win on its own.

What it cannot tell you, and this is the important part

Here are the limits, stated plainly, because they are the source of nearly every unfair conversation that follows a driving alert.

  1. 1Who was driving. The phone knows it was in a moving vehicle. It does not know whether its owner was at the wheel, in the passenger seat, or on a bus. A teenager flagged for phone use may have been a passenger in a friend's car, and they will be furious if you assume otherwise.
  2. 2Why someone braked hard. A child stepping into the road and a badly judged approach to a junction produce the same sensor signature. One is good driving and one is not, and the data cannot separate them.
  3. 3Context around speed. Speed limit data comes from a map database, and databases are sometimes wrong or out of date, particularly on new roads and temporary limits. A speeding flag is a prompt to ask, not a proven offence.
  4. 4Whether a drive was safe. Safety is about judgement, anticipation, fatigue and the weather. None of those are in the sensor stream. A drive with zero flagged events can still have been a bad drive.
  5. 5What the phone use actually was. A passenger changing music, a phone sliding off a seat, and a driver reading a message can look similar to a sensor, though the pattern over many trips is more informative than any single event.

The four one sentence rules for driving data

  • Data starts a conversation, it never ends one.
  • One event is noise, a pattern across weeks is a signal.
  • Never raise an alert while the person is still driving.
  • If you would not say it about your own driving report, do not say it about theirs.

Introducing alerts to a teen driver as a shared agreement

How you introduce this determines whether it becomes a normal part of family life or a permanent grievance. The approach that works is symmetry: everyone who drives is in the same system, on the same terms, seeing the same reports.

  1. 1Turn it on for yourself first, for two weeks. Look at your own report. You will find something, and finding it is the point.
  2. 2Show them your report before you ask to see theirs. This single move changes the entire tone of the conversation.
  3. 3Agree what you will look at, and what you will not. For example: arrival alerts and phone use, and no line by line review of every trip.
  4. 4Agree what happens after an event. Write it down. A hard braking event means a question at dinner, not a confiscated key.
  5. 5Agree when it gets reviewed. Six months of clean driving should visibly buy more privacy, otherwise there is no incentive in the arrangement at all.

The last point is the one families skip, and it is the one teenagers care about most. A monitoring arrangement with no path out of it is a punishment. A monitoring arrangement with a clear off ramp is a probation period, and most new drivers accept that as fair.

Using the data without spying

There is a real difference between safety information and surveillance, and it is not about which features you enable. It is about what you do with what you see.

  • Look at trends, not trips. Open the report weekly, not hourly. Hourly checking is a habit that harms the checker as much as the checked.
  • Ask open questions. "The app flagged something on Tuesday, what happened there?" leaves room for the answer to be a cat running out.
  • Never use driving data for a non driving argument. The moment a route becomes evidence about who someone was with, the system loses all legitimacy.
  • Be honest when you are anxious. Saying "I am worrying, tell me when you get there" is more effective and more truthful than pretending to review data neutrally.
  • Let notifications replace checking. An arrival alert exists so you can stop staring at a map.

If you take one thing from this guide, take this. Driving alerts are a smoke detector, not a security camera. They are good at telling you that something might deserve attention, and poor at telling you what it was.

They also do nothing at all about the largest factors in new driver risk, which are experience, fatigue, passengers and time of day. Those are addressed by rules, practice hours and conversations, not by an app. Any family treating an alert feed as a substitute for those things has bought reassurance rather than safety, and the two are easy to mistake for each other in the first nervous months of a teenager driving alone.
