No. A location update is a handful of numbers, roughly the size of a short text message, so background sharing sits at the bottom of any monthly data report. What does use data is you opening the app and looking at the map, because map imagery is the heavy part. On a small prepaid plan, check the map less and leave the sharing on.
A reader wrote to me with a very reasonable worry. Her son is on a small prepaid plan, the kind where the last week of the month is spent rationing, and she wanted to know whether adding a family locator would quietly eat it. She had assumed that something described as continuous must be expensive, because most continuous things are.
It is a fair assumption and it is wrong, for a reason worth understanding rather than just accepting. The confusion comes from picturing the wrong object. People imagine that a location app is streaming something, a live view, a moving map, a picture of a street. It is not. It is sending numbers.
Below is what actually crosses the network, what the genuinely data hungry part is, how the picture changes abroad, and how to check the real figure on your own phone rather than taking my word for it. I will also be honest about the one situation where the answer changes.
What actually gets transmitted
When your phone shares its position, it sends a small structured message. Two coordinates, a timestamp, an accuracy figure, usually a battery percentage, and an identifier saying which device this is. That is close to the whole payload. Written out as plain text it would fit comfortably inside a single SMS with room to spare.
Compare that to the things you already do without thinking. One photo sent in a family chat is thousands of times larger. A minute of video is larger still. A single web page with images on it dwarfs an entire day of position updates. The unit people should hold in their head is not the map, it is the text message.
- Position updates are tiny and infrequent. A well behaved locator does not send a fresh point every second. It sends one when you have actually moved, and goes quiet when you have not.
- Sitting still is nearly free. A phone on a desk for three hours produces almost no traffic, because there is nothing new to report. This is the same logic that keeps the battery cost down, which I covered in why location sharing drains battery.
- Nothing visual is uploaded. No imagery, no street view, no photographs. Your phone does not send a picture of where you are. It sends where you are.

The part that does use data: looking at the map
Here is the honest half of the answer. Maps are pictures. When you open a family map, your phone downloads map tiles, small square images of roads and buildings, and it downloads a fresh set every time you pan to a new area or zoom to a new level. Zooming in on a street corner to see exactly which side of the road someone is on pulls a batch of new tiles.
So the data cost of a family locator is not really driven by the app running. It is driven by how often you open it and how much you scroll around inside it. A parent who glances once at pickup time and closes the app uses very little. A parent who leaves the map open on the sofa for twenty minutes on a Friday night, zooming and following, uses considerably more.
There is a small mercy built in: map tiles are cached. The streets around your home, your school and your workplace get downloaded once and then reused, so the areas you look at most are the cheapest to look at. It is unfamiliar territory, a new town, a motorway route, that costs anything worth noticing.
Where your data actually goes, in order
- Map tiles you request by opening the app. The largest share by a wide margin.
- Zooming and panning around. Each new view is a new set of images.
- Position updates from your own phone. Small, steady, unremarkable.
- Notifications and alerts. Text sized, effectively negligible.
- App updates from the store. Not the app running, but worth remembering when a monthly figure looks odd.
What a month actually looks like
I am not going to quote you a precise number, because anyone who does is guessing at your life. The figure depends on how much you move, how often you check, how many people you follow and whether you spend your commute staring at a map. What I can give you is the shape of it.
In a normal month, the background sharing portion is measured in a small number of megabytes. It sits near the bottom of the per app list in your phone's own data report, well below your messaging app, far below anything with video in it. The map viewing portion is larger and entirely under your control, because it only happens when you choose to look.
The useful comparison for most families: a locator running all month typically costs less data than a handful of short videos in the family group chat. If your plan survives the group chat, it survives this.
The one case where the answer changes
If the phone is in a poor signal area for long stretches, it may retry sending updates that did not go through, and retries cost a little more than clean sends. Roaming and being abroad
Abroad, the question stops being how much data and starts being how expensive each megabyte is. The volume does not change. The price per unit might change dramatically, depending on your operator and where you are standing.
- Background sharing abroad remains tiny. If you have any roaming allowance at all, position updates are not what will exhaust it.
- Map browsing abroad is where a bill grows. Unfamiliar streets mean no cached tiles, so every look downloads fresh imagery.
- Turning data roaming off stops sharing entirely. The phone cannot report a position with no route to send it on. Positions resume the moment it reconnects to wifi.

How to check the real number on your own phone
You do not have to believe an article. Both phone platforms will tell you exactly what each app has used, and it takes under a minute.
- 1On iPhone: open Settings, then Mobile Data or Cellular. Scroll down past the switches to the list of apps. Each one shows its usage for the current period. Note the figure next to your locator and compare it to your messaging and video apps.
- 2On Android: open Settings, then Network and internet, then the data usage or SIM section, then App data usage. The same per app list appears, usually with a monthly cycle you can adjust.
- 3Reset the counter to get a clean month. Android lets you set the billing cycle date. On iPhone the statistics reset only when you tap Reset Statistics at the bottom, so if that has never been tapped, the number covers years, not a month.
That last point catches a lot of people. A very large number in the iPhone list frequently means the counter has been running since the phone was set up. Reset it, wait a week, look again, and you will have a figure you can trust.
If you are on a very small prepaid plan
This is where the advice becomes specific rather than reassuring, because a plan that runs out is a real constraint and not a worry to be talked out of.
Five settings for a tight data plan
- Keep sharing on, check the map less. The reverse instinct, turning sharing off to save data, sacrifices the useful part to save almost nothing.
- Lean on arrival alerts instead of the map. A notification saying someone got home is a few bytes. Opening the map to confirm it is not.
- Look at the map on wifi where you can. At home, at work, in the cafe. The tiles cache and stay cached.
- Avoid idle zooming. Following a dot along a road for ten minutes is the single most expensive habit in the app, and it rarely tells you anything the arrival alert will not.
- Check the per app figure once a month. Facts settle arguments about data faster than estimates do.
