Why is the location wrong? Fixing inaccurate GPS, step by step

The short answer

A wrong location is almost always a data problem, not a person problem: weak satellite signal indoors or between tall buildings, a battery saver mode suspending updates, or a stale ping being shown as if it were current. Check the timestamp before you check anything else, because most wrong dots are simply old dots. Real accuracy on a good day can reach up to 95 percent, but no app can promise a perfect position all the time.

There is a specific kind of alarm that only exists because of family maps. You glance at the app, and the dot is somewhere impossible. A field. The middle of a lake. Two streets from where they said they would be. Your stomach drops, and for about forty seconds you are certain something has gone wrong.

In almost every case, nothing has. What has gone wrong is the data, and the reasons are boring and well understood. I want to give you the boring reasons, in order of how often they are the culprit, plus a decision path that keeps you calm long enough to reach the right conclusion.

I also want to be straightforward about limits, including ours. Location accuracy is a probability, not a promise, and any company that tells you otherwise is selling something.

First, read the timestamp

This is the single highest value habit in this entire guide. Every family map shows when a position was last updated, and most wrong locations are not wrong at all. They are correct positions from twenty minutes ago being read as if they were live.

One sentence rule: a location is a fact with a timestamp attached, and without the timestamp it is just a rumour.

  • Updated seconds ago means the phone is reporting normally and the position is as good as the conditions allow.
  • Updated a few minutes ago is completely normal when someone is sitting still. Phones deliberately report less often when nothing is moving, to save battery.
  • Updated 30 minutes or more ago means something is interrupting reporting: no signal, battery saver, the app closed by the system, or the phone is off.

A dot in the wrong place with an old timestamp is not a mystery. It is the last place the phone managed to check in, sitting there patiently because there has been nothing newer to replace it.

The honest list of causes

Here is what actually goes wrong, roughly in order of frequency. Understanding these makes the fixes obvious.

Urban canyons

Satellite positioning needs a clear line of sight to several satellites at once. In a street lined with tall buildings, the phone often cannot see enough of them directly, so it uses signals that have bounced off a glass tower first. A bounced signal took a longer path, the phone calculates a longer distance, and the result is a position that can be off by a whole block. This is why city centre locations wander and countryside locations rarely do.

Indoors

Satellite signal barely penetrates a building, so indoors the phone leans on nearby Wi-Fi networks instead. It compares the networks it can see against a huge database of known network positions. This works remarkably well most of the time, and it fails in specific ways: in a new building nothing is in the database yet, and if someone moved house and took their router with them, the database may still place that network at the old address. That is the classic case of a phone appearing in a completely different neighbourhood while sitting on a sofa.

Battery saver modes

This is the most common cause of stale positions by a wide margin. When a phone drops into low power mode, the operating system throttles background activity, and location updates are one of the first things to be cut. Both platforms also have aggressive app management that can suspend an app it thinks is idle. Nothing is broken. The phone is simply doing what it was told to do.

Airplane mode, no signal, and phones that are off

A phone with no data connection may still work out where it is, but it cannot tell anyone. On the underground, in a rural notspot, or in airplane mode, the map freezes at the last successful report and thaws when connection returns, often with a sudden jump that looks alarming and is actually the system catching up.

Signs it is a data problem, not a person problem

  • The timestamp is old, even by a few minutes.
  • The wrong position is somewhere the phone genuinely was earlier today.
  • The dot has a large accuracy circle around it rather than a tight point.
  • The person is indoors, underground, or in a dense city centre.
  • Their battery was low the last time you looked.

The calm decision path

Use this before you do anything else. It takes under a minute and it prevents the phone call that turns a normal afternoon into a family argument.

  1. 1Read the timestamp. Old position, likely explanation found. Fresh position, keep going.
  2. 2Look at the accuracy circle. A wide circle means the phone is telling you honestly that it is unsure. A tight dot in a strange place is more interesting than a fuzzy one.
  3. 3Ask whether the wrong place makes sense. Is it their school, our house, the shop they passed? Last known positions are usually somewhere ordinary.
  4. 4Consider the environment. Indoors, underground, tall buildings, or the countryside with poor coverage all explain a lot.
  5. 5Wait two minutes and refresh. An enormous share of wrong dots correct themselves in that window as the phone gets a better fix.
  6. 6Then, and only then, send a normal message. Not eleven messages. One: "all good?"

Fixes, ranked by how often they work

If one person's location is persistently unreliable rather than occasionally odd, work down this list on their phone. Stop when it improves.

  1. 1Turn off battery optimisation for the location app. On Android this is in the app's battery settings, set to unrestricted. On iPhone, check that Low Power Mode is not permanently on and that Background App Refresh is enabled for the app.
  2. 2Set location permission to Always and Precise. While using the app will produce exactly the symptom of a map that only updates when someone opens the app.
  3. 3Turn Wi-Fi on, even when using mobile data. Wi-Fi scanning is a major input to positioning, and switching it off degrades accuracy noticeably indoors.
  4. 4Restart the phone. Genuinely effective for a stuck location service, and it costs thirty seconds.
  5. 5Check for a system update. Positioning bugs get fixed in point releases more often than people realise.
  6. 6Recalibrate the compass in a map app. Fixes the case where the position is right but the direction is wrong.
  7. 7Reinstall the app as a last step, and re-grant permissions carefully afterwards.

When a wrong dot is worth acting on

Almost never on its own. A wrong location is evidence about a phone, not about a person, and the two are easy to confuse when you are anxious.

  • Not worth acting on: an odd position with an old timestamp, a jump that resolves within a couple of minutes, or a wandering dot in a city centre.
  • Worth a normal message: the position has not updated for a long time and they were expected somewhere by now.
  • Worth a call: no updates plus no reply plus a specific reason for concern, such as a planned drive that should have finished an hour ago.
  • Worth escalating beyond the app: you have an actual reason to believe someone is in danger. At that point the app is a supporting detail, not the decision.

Being honest about our own accuracy
