Does a VPN hide your location from family apps? An honest answer

The short answer

A VPN hides your IP address, so websites can no longer guess your city from your network. It does not touch GPS, Wi-Fi positioning, or your phone's location services, which is what a family locator actually reads. With a VPN switched on, your family app still shows where you really are.

A teenager in our extended family worked this out on a Tuesday and announced it at dinner like a magician revealing a card. Install a VPN, pick a server in another country, and the map will think you are in Amsterdam. It is a good theory. It is also wrong, and it is wrong in a way that is genuinely worth understanding, because the reason it fails explains most of how phone location works.

There are two different things people call your location, and a VPN only affects one of them. Everything confusing about this topic comes from mixing them up.

This guide is not an argument for or against VPNs. I use one. It is an argument for knowing exactly what a tool does, because a security tool you misunderstand is a security tool you will misuse.

The two locations your phone has

Your phone carries a network location and a device location, and they are produced by completely separate machinery.

  • Network location is a guess. A website sees the IP address your traffic arrives from and looks it up in a database of which addresses belong to which internet providers in which regions. Accuracy ranges from roughly right city to embarrassingly wrong country.
  • Device location is a measurement. Your phone works out where it is using satellites, nearby Wi-Fi networks, cell towers, and its own motion sensors, then hands that answer to apps you have granted permission.

One sentence rule: a VPN rewrites the guess and leaves the measurement alone.

What a VPN actually changes

A VPN builds an encrypted tunnel from your device to a server somewhere else, and sends your internet traffic out from there. Two useful consequences follow.

  1. 1The network you are on cannot read your traffic. The cafe Wi-Fi, the hotel router, the airport hotspot, all of them see encrypted data going to one server and nothing about what is inside it.
  2. 2The sites you visit see the VPN server's address, not yours. Their IP based guess about your location becomes a guess about the server's location instead.

That second point is real and it matters. If your concern is advertising networks profiling you by region, or a website building a picture of your home connection over months, a VPN meaningfully interferes with that. It is a privacy tool for the network layer, and it is a good one.

A VPN protects the pipe your data travels through. It does not edit the data your phone puts into the pipe.

What a VPN does not change

Here is the list that matters for families, and none of it is affected by a VPN being on, off, or set to a server on another continent.

  • Satellite positioning. Your phone is receiving timing signals from satellites overhead and calculating a position from them. That calculation happens on the device, before any network is involved. There is no tunnel to route it through.
  • Wi-Fi positioning. Your phone notices the identifiers of nearby wireless networks and compares them against a database of where those networks are. It does not have to connect to them, only see them.
  • Cell tower positioning. Your phone is registered with towers whose positions are known. That relationship is with the mobile network, not with the internet.
  • Operating system location services. This is the layer that collects all of the above, produces one coordinate, and hands it to apps you have approved. It sits below the VPN entirely.
  • Timezone, motion, and altitude signals. Small things, but they corroborate the rest and none of them travel over your VPN.

So when a family locator shows a position, it is reporting what the operating system measured, encrypted and sent to the service. The VPN faithfully encrypts and delivers that accurate coordinate to its destination. It does not inspect it, and it would be a strange and rather alarming VPN if it did.

The one line to remember

  • A VPN changes where your traffic appears to come from.
  • A family locator reports where your device measured itself to be.
  • Those are different questions, so a VPN does not answer the second one.
  • Turning a VPN on will not make a shared location wrong, stale, or hidden.

Why the myth is so persistent

The myth survives because people have seen it work. Load a streaming catalogue with a VPN on and the content changes. Search for something and the local results shift. Check one of those what is my location websites and it confidently names a city you are not in. All of that is real, and all of it is IP geolocation doing exactly what it does.

The leap people make is assuming every app determines location the same way. Websites in a browser usually cannot see your device location unless you grant it, so they fall back to the IP guess. An installed app with location permission never needs the guess. It asks the operating system and gets the measurement.

Three related claims that are also not true

  • A VPN turns off GPS. It does not. GPS is a receiver on the device and has nothing to do with your internet connection.
  • A VPN stops an app from knowing you are travelling. It does not. The device knows, and if the app has permission, so does the app.
  • A VPN makes you anonymous. It does not. You are signed into accounts that know exactly who you are, and your VPN provider can see your traffic where it exits the tunnel. Choose one you would be comfortable being seen by.

There are ways to change what a phone reports as its position, and they involve developer settings or mock location tools rather than a VPN. If your family conversation is really about a teenager wanting to obscure where they are, that is a conversation about trust and about what your family agreed to share, not a technical problem. When a VPN genuinely helps a family

None of the above means skip the VPN. It means aim it at the right problem.

  • Public Wi-Fi. Airport lounges, hotels, cafes, campsites, station platforms. Networks you do not control, shared with people you do not know. This is the strongest everyday case for a VPN and the one I would actually set up for a travelling teenager.
  • Shared accommodation. Holiday rentals and hostels often run one flat network where devices can see each other. A tunnel is a reasonable precaution.
  • Reducing casual profiling. Advertising and analytics networks lean on IP addresses to build regional profiles. A VPN muddies that, which is a modest but real gain.
  • Work requirements. Some parents are required to run one. That is fine, and it will not interfere with family location sharing.

And a caution worth stating plainly: a VPN moves your trust rather than removing it. You stop trusting the cafe router and start trusting the VPN company. Read what they log. Prefer providers who explain their practices in ordinary language. If a service is free and asks nothing of you, ask what is paying for the servers.

Practical settings that avoid confusion

  1. 1Pick a VPN server in your own country for daily use. It gives you the protection without breaking maps, banking apps, or local search.
  2. 2Allow the VPN to reconnect automatically, so it is not silently off when you join an unfamiliar network.
  3. 3Keep location permissions honest and deliberate. The permission screen, not the VPN, is where you actually decide who sees your position.
  4. 4Review the sharing list in your family app now and then. Everyone should be able to say out loud who can see them.

How to explain this to a teenager in thirty seconds

Skip the lecture. Try this, which has the advantage of being true and of respecting their intelligence.

A VPN hides which door your internet traffic comes out of. Your phone still knows which street it is standing on, because satellites told it, not the internet.

Then follow it with the part that actually matters, which is not technical at all. If they want to be somewhere without it showing up on a map, the useful conversation is about what your family has agreed to, and about pausing sharing openly rather than trying to fool it. A system everyone understands is a system people keep using.

That is the whole honest answer. A VPN is a good tool for a specific job, family location is a different job, and pretending otherwise only leads to someone being surprised at the worst possible moment.
